By zooming in substantially, you can see the tombstone of Mary Surratt at the top of this image, between two trees. Surratt was the first woman executed by the U.S. Federal Government, sentenced to death for her role in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The degree of Surratt’s involvement in the plot has long been disputed, but the testimony of innkeeper John Minchin Lloyd was influential in her conviction. Lloyd’s prostrate grave marker appears in the foreground of this image, 350 feet south of Surratt’s.
